Fashion Forward
For me, fashion allows for an outward expression of an inner attention to creativity, detail, and a desire to direct and make an impact.
I always like the mottos: Show up like you mean it, Arrive with intention. To blend in is to fade out.
You might reasonably ask, why on earth would a sixty-eight-year-old man be interested in entering or reentering the fashion world.
My entire life since childhood has been an adventure, with endless new endeavors and pioneering new things. 2018 has been especially so with the passing of my beloved friend, my father.
At his funeral one of my sister’s friends commented “he was the best dressed man I ever knew”. While that was certainly true of my father, it barely held a candle to the stature my mother held as a high fashion and runway model. She captured the eye of their jet set culture of suburban Detroit. In the 1950’s Detroit, the Motor City or MO - Town was about as hip as it came. Designers of muscle cars and music ranked Detroit among the top five cities in America
.
As my mother was in high demand, she also opened the door for me and my siblings to splash full page ads of the Detroit papers as models for almost a decade. As the oldest son, this fashioned a huge portion of my identity as it gathered momentum along with all of the other surrounding perks.
So again, why at sixty-eight? And why would someone want this public expression who has built a hidden shire in the woods in order to pursue a cherished monastic life style, where I consume an unwavering dedication to spirituality, contemplation and prayer? How can I entertain something so vastly on the other end of the spectrum as fashion? I can just hear some of my life long friends wondering what in the world is David up to?
For me I think it's a matter of integral honesty and stewardship. When you’re in the vicinity of sixty-eight, while you can still see more mountains to climb with horse power to spare, there also come glimpses of sunsets. In that space one needs to be true to all of who they are and were given.
Fashion, or more accurately style, is as natural to me as breathing and so I will breathe on and be true to what God has entrusted me with.
Fashion forward.
